Description

The Fourth Africa Conference on Sexual Health and Rights shall be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (8th – 12th February 2010).  This conference is part of a long-term process of building and fostering regional dialogue on sexual rights and health that leads to concrete action to influence policy particularly that of the African Union and its bodies.  This conference follows three previous conferences: February 4 – 7, 2008 in Abuja (Nigeria); June 19 – 21, 2006 in Nairobi (Kenya); February 25 – 29, 2004 in Johannesburg (South Africa).  It will focus on critical documents that have been developed to promote comprehensive sexual health and rights in Africa, including the Maputo Plan of Action and the ICPD.

Objectives
  • To identify new, emerging and existing vulnerabilities and vulnerable/marginalised people that are critical to sexual health and rights/HIV & AIDS interventions using a sexuality and rights approach.
  • To explore how the application of human rights framework to sexuality might provide new insights in developing interventions to reduce the spread of HIV & AIDS and provide a more comprehensive sexual health to all persons.   
  • To review and map out new and existing innovative strategies, programming and funding that best addresses the interlinkages between sexuality, sexual health/rights and HIV & AIDS for future SRH and HIV & AIDS interventions.

Expected Outcomes 

  1. Established platform for networking amongst activists, professionals and experts who are working in the field of sexuality, sexual health and rights to strengthen linkages and outcomes between HIV & AIDS and sexuality, in terms of programmes, policies, legislation, technological updates and experience sharing
  2. Dissemination of relevant international declarations, charters and guidelines to organizations and stakeholders to enhance their role in addressing the application of rights to sexuality especially within the framework of SRH and HIV & AIDS.
  3. Enhanced advocacy with governments, regional economic commissions (RECs) and the African Union to support and implement the commitments made on sexual health and HIV & AIDS in the Maputo Plan of Action, ICPD and relevant African country frameworks for achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and in with a sexuality and sexual rights lens.
  4. Enhanced skills on new approaches, innovations and strategies on sexuality, sexual health and rights and HIV & AIDS. 
  5. Developed media, communications and advocacy strategies to increase dialogue and action on sexuality, sexual health and sexual rights nationally and regionally.
  6. Conference technical report/publication and Policy Briefs providing critical analyses of sexuality.
